With spring comes lots of rain, and that means lots of standing water—especially in Port St. Lucie! In this blog, we’ll go over what kind of bugs standing water could attract, as well as what you can do to avoid having a big pest problem.
What Kind of Pests Can Standing Water Attract?
When you hear the term “standing water” you probably think of mosquitos first, but the truth is that standing water can attract a wide variety of pests.
Ants
We know not to leave food out for pests, but a lot of times we forget that they need water, too. Standing water in or around your home can attract ants. In addition to being a nuisance, some kinds of ants can actually damage your house.
Rodents
Standing water can also attract larger pests like rats, mice, and squirrels. They can contaminate your food, damage your house, and spread disease!
Cockroaches
These are some of the worst pests you can have because they’re so difficult to get rid of. Like with many other pests, food isn’t the only thing that attracts them!
Mosquitoes
The reason you probably think of mosquitoes first when you hear “standing water” is because standing water does more than just attract these pests: It provides the perfect environment for them to breed and multiply!
How to Avoid a Big Pest Problem
Keeping your home clean and clutter-free, storing food in airtight containers, and keeping vegetation up against your home trimmed are all great ways to help keep pests at bay.
During this time of year, though, add an extra thing to that list—watching out for standing water! Keep an eye out for any leaks around your home and fix them as soon as you can to avoid water pooling around your house. During the spring, it’s also a good idea to cover up (or at least clean out regularly) things like birdbaths and fountains. Also be sure to keep your gutters free of debris—with all the spring rain, you don’t want those clogging up!
