Why You’re Seeing Ants in Your Florida Home and Why They Keep Coming Back

(It’s NOT because you don’t keep a clean house.)

Your home is built on a swamp. While this may not be perfectly accurate in every case, but it’s not that far off either. The thousands of miles of man-made canals that carry water from our inland neighborhoods to the Indian River – so often in the news in our area – are what keeps our area from reverting back to its natural state. One that is often inundated with water. Take a look at the above image of western Martin county from 1958. You’ll notice the pockmarked landscaped of small ponds holding water. Even the air on the Treasure Coast, in the form of high humidity, accelerates insect reproduction. Insects, having adapted their behavior to living in areas seasonally inundated with water, instinctively head for dry land when the summer rains begin. This used to mean the head of a palm tree, or a scrub dune. Today, more often than not, it’s your home that provides refuge for insects during the rainy season

The Most Common Ants in Port St Lucie and Palm City

Ghost Ants – Those “tiny ants in the kitchen and on the counter”. Commonly referred to as sugar ants, these are by far the most common ants found inside homes in our area.

  • Fire Ants – this invasive species is the most common pest in lawns and mulch beds. They get their name from the painful bite that delivers a burning sensation to the unlucky recipient. A particular concern for parents and grandparents of young children.
  • Big Headed Ants – though less well known than ghost ants and fire ants, Port St Lucie and Palm City residents are becoming acquainted with these ants quickly. They tend to invade homes, building actual nests inside the walls, creating a constant mess of dirt spilling out from beneath the baseboards. Their presence is often mistaken for evidence of termites.
  • Carpenter Ants – It is a misconception that these ants consume wood in the same way that termites do. In fact, they don’t eat wood at all, but instead take advantage of rotten or damaged wood by pulling out loose debris and nesting inside the hollowed out cavity. They will also sometimes repurpose old termite damage. They aren’t particularly aggressive but when they do attack, their powerful jaws deliver a painful bite.
  • Pharoah Ants – in the 1990’s these ants were quite common on the Treasure Coast. During the early 2000’s they were largely supplanted by other ants species. In recent years, they have returned and seem to be trending in the direction of being a common problem again. Proper treatment of these ants is critical as they are unique in that that readily nest inside walls. They are differentiated still more in that they will readily “bud” new queens if they are distressed. This means, if sprayed with the wrong product, the problem will go from one part of the house to several in the form of new, disconnected colonies.

Knowledge is Key to Ant Control

There was a time, 40 – 50 years ago, where exterminators might have showed up with near-nuclear level products that would leave no signs left after an application. Thankfully for the health of people, pets, and the environment, that is no longer the case.
Instead today, there are a great array of specialized products to solve ant problems. Knowledge of the species in question and the appropriate treatment are key to control. Killing ants is not hard – that can be done with a shoe. Solving an ant infestation absolutely requires knowledge on the species in question.

Ghost (Sugar) Ant Treatment for Kitchens and Bathrooms

Ghost (Sugar) Ant Treatment for Kitchens and Bathrooms

While sugar ants can show up anywhere in a home, as their colloquial name suggests, they are often found in kitchens. At Green Pest Services, we typically utilize natural products inside homes. This can be important when the focus of the treatment is in an area where families spend so much of their time and where food is stored and prepared.

  • How do I get rid of sugar ants in my kitchen for good? While some ants can often be controlled with a single treatment – carpenter ants, for example – ghost ants are often an ongoing problem that requires ongoing treatment. This is particularly true if you live in a home or neighborhood with lots of lush landscaping. Ghost ants thrive in this kind of environment. If you happen to live in a home with minimal landscaping that also lacks irrigation, it may be possible to solve a ghost ant issue for an extended period of time with only one treatment.
  • Why do sugar ants keep coming back even after spraying? Spraying is rarely effective against ghost ants. While they can be killed with nearly anything – vinegar, glass cleaner – killing them is not the issue. Ending the seemingly endless stream of new ants coming in is the key to control. Ghost ants contain multiple queens. Because of this, simply killing some ants, even including a queen, will not solve the underlying issue. Comprehensive treatment, both inside and out, is needed for long-term control.

Carpenter Ant Control and Wood Damage Prevention

Carpenter Ants are more common in areas close to woodlands or recently developed land. We see termite infections more often in Palm City Farms and Tradition for this reason. While they don’t eat wood per se, they can be the canary in the coalmine that there is damaged wood in the home. Additionally Carpenter Ants readily nest in attics. The utilization of appropriate protein-based baits is critical for control in this situation. Carpenter ants are easily identified by their exceptionally large size when compared to other ants. Another identifying characteristic of Carpenter Ants is they are very active at dawn and dusk but rarely seen during the day unless disturbed.

How Do I Prevent Ant Infestation Myself?

While many people will find a profession pest control is the easiest, if not the only option, there are some things you can do for free as best practices for preventing ant invasions.

1. Keep hedges and trees trim back from the home.

This may seem like a small thing considering ants can walk from the trees and hedges to your home, but it’s not quite that simple. For creatures as small as ants, it’s possible for them to have the entire eco-system they need to survive in a row of bushes or the head of a palm tree. Over years of pest control experience on the Treasure Coast, we promise you – this makes a difference.

2. Caulking and sealing.

Many of the homes in Tradition are brand new, so this may be less pertinent for some than others, but even after just a few years cracks and separations begin to form around the outside of homes. Around pipes and spigots, windows, and exterior light fixtures are all excellent places for caulking and sealing to make entry into homes more difficult.
