Palm City and Pest Control

Palm City’s warm, humid climate is a haven for a variety of pests. While temperatures are a major driver of insect activity, in Florida where temperatures rarely dip below freezing, humidity is often a more important factor. The dry season on the Treasure Coast generally runs from November to May. Once the regular afternoon showers begin, pest activity increases exponentially.

Interestingly, Martin County is unusual in that it lays right at the transition point of three different Köppen climate classifications. Most of the county, including Palm City, lies in the (Cfa) Humid Subtropical Climate, while Hobe Sound is primarily in a Tropical Monsoon Climate (Am), and Jupiter Island in the very southeast of the county lies in a Tropical Rainforest Climate (Af).

Ant Exterminator in Palm City

  • Ants – Whether tiny little sugar ants running around on the counter or painful fire ant mounds in the yard, ant issues are the most common pest control problem in Martin County. GPS are experts in solving ant troubles in residential areas.

Ghost Ants / Sugar Ants – probably the most common pest inside homes in Palm City. These tiny little ants are often spotted running across the counter in kitchens and bathrooms and even sometimes keyboards and computer screens. Though generally harmless, they can be quite a nuisance and a source of embarrassment when entertaining guests.

Fire Ants – Unlike Ghost Ants, Fire Ants can be quite harmful. Fire Ants both bite and sting and the venom they inject can range from a mild, though still painful bump, to severe reactions including anaphylactic shock. They are particularly troublesome for children and small pets who don’t know to be on the lookout for the characteristic mounds. Fire Ant prevalence becomes more pronounced during the rainy season when they build their mounds higher up off the ground to get out of the wet soil.

Cockroach Exterminator in Palm City

  • Cockroaches – There are several species of cockroaches found in and around home on the Treasure Coast. All, with one major exception, generally make their way into homes from the outside and are not well adapted to survive inside despite their occasional presence. Chronic sightings of cockroaches that are commonly found outside is often a sign of a moisture issue inside the home. Below are a few of the most common roach species we find in Palm City.

The American Cockroach – colloquially referred to as the Palmetto Bug or Water Bug, originates from Africa and is actually not native to the Americas, despite its name. Periplaneta americana is the largest species of roach commonly found in South Florida. They thrive in the hot humid conditions found in Martin County and can reach numbers in the thousands in sewers and septic tanks. Generally speaking, they need high levels of humidity to survive. For this reason, regular sightings of Palmetto Bugs inside of a home can be a “canary in a coal mine” that there are larger moisture issues inside of a home.

The German Cockroach – these are the roaches that often come to mind if you are from the Northern U.S. where cockroaches generally aren’t a part of the environment. Unlike any other species of roach, German roaches are specially evolved to live indoors, and are not established outdoors anywhere in the U.S., including Florida. German Cockroaches evolved from the Asian Cockroach only a little over 2000 years ago in dense human settlements in south Asia. Today German roaches are a major pest infesting homes and spreading with apartment buildings and hotels.

At Green Pest Services we are experts at solving German roach infestations with minimal use of chemicals or sprays.

Mosquito Exterminator in Palm City

  • Mosquitoes – Mosquitoes are obviously a huge problem in our area. The problem is particularly pronounced during the rainy summer months. Mosquitos tend to be even worse in Palm City however, because our many golf communities such as Monarch, Martin Downs, and Hammock Creek, all have numerous manmade ponds and lakes that retain fresh water year-round. GPS offers monthly mosquito treatments so you and your family can enjoy your backyard.

Spider Exterminator in Palm City

  • Spiders – There are many species of spider found in and around homes in Palm City. Newer homes tend to have lots of Brown and Black Widow Spiders, while older homes tend to see more Wolf Spiders. Green Pest Services has extensive knowledge and experience with the control of spiders.

One fun fact about widow spiders in Martin County, the Red Widow Spider is endemic only to Florida and even then, in only small isolated populations. Seabranch Preserve State Park, and Jonathan Dickinson State Park are two of only a handful of places in the whole world where these visually striking spiders can be observed. Here you can find a map of their observations in our area.

Rodent Control in Palm City

  • Rodents – With all of the growth in our area rodent issues have become a serious concern. Additionally, the rodents found in and around homes on the Treasure coast are rarely mice. The rodent that is most common and most destructive in our area is the rat. They are nearly ubiquitous now. It is also worth noting that rats are largely nocturnal. We provide rodent protection as part of our basic pest control service. When we tell new clients this, they often mention that they haven’t seen any rodents. Unfortunately, the first sign of a rodent problem is often the sounds of scratching in the attic in the middle of the night.
